RULES VIDEO

A classic bluffing negotiation game where players split into Merchants and a Sheriff, trying to smuggle contraband (crossbows, silk, and more, beyond just chicken, cheese, and apples) through the town gate and rake in the most money. Merchants stash cards in their bag and declare something like 'Four apples' to the Sheriff. The Sheriff has the authority to inspect any merchant's bag, so merchants trying to dodge inspection will attempt off-the-record bribery, saying things like 'Let me through and I'll give you 5 gold plus a chicken next turn.' If an inspection catches a lie, the merchant pays a fine — but if the Sheriff opens the bag of someone who declared honestly, the Sheriff has to pay the merchant compensation instead, making for a nerve-wracking psychological duel.

When there are 3 or fewer players so the chaotic tension of bribery and scheming can't come alive; avoid it with quiet players who feel severe personal resistance or emotional fatigue toward a negotiation genre built entirely on deceiving others and brazen lying.

Scores by situation

New faces+

♡♡♡☆☆ [Ordinary / Conversation Killer] The rules themselves are simple enough to explain in about five minutes, but among people who've just met, offering a bribe or brazenly lying to someone's face can feel pretty awkward and cringy. Instead of exploding laughter, there's a real risk it turns into a flat game where everyone just plays it safe and honestly hauls produce.

Close friends+

♡♡♡♡♡ [Dopamine Explosion] The true masters of this game are close friends. Sitting down with people who know your face and tendencies inside out, saying with a straight face 'I swear these are really apples, open my bag and you go bankrupt,' or striking side deals with bribes only to backstab everyone — when that betrayal unfolds, the shouting and entertainment-grade dopamine hit their peak. It's a friendship-wrecking cheat code that's hard to stop at just one round.

Strategy+

♡♡☆☆☆ [Undersized] For intermediate Euro strategists who love designing precise engine-buildups or long-term resource portfolios, the system's depth is much too shallow. The game runs over 90% on qualitative conversation, negotiation, and bluffing between players rather than deep mind games, so it feels thin if you approach it as a strategy game.

Couple+

♡☆☆☆☆ [Fight Starter] The core interaction is lying to someone's face on purpose, promising bribes and then bailing, or deliberately screwing someone over to squeeze a fine out of them. For a couple hoping to sit down and enjoy peaceful emotional healing, the direct jabs and emotional friction are far too spicy and can easily sour the mood.

Duel+

♡☆☆☆☆ [Library Silence] For the bribery deals and mutual suspicion to work at all, you need at least 3 players, and to really enjoy it, 4-5 is the sweet spot. Two-player play is essentially impossible, and forcing it makes the whole bribery machinery grind to a halt, evaporating the game's core fun entirely.

Gateway+

♡☆☆☆☆ [Tier 1 (Not Recommended)] The easy, intuitive rules deliver instant bluffing fun, but it's not suited as a first stepping stone for learning the joy and satisfaction of organically managing resources and building an engine in a 'modern Euro strategy board game.' The system's whole structure runs in the opposite, party-first direction.
